In a time when we have more doctors, more hospitals, more medications and the newest technology, we as a medical community have not improved the overall health of this country's citizens. We diagnose more people with diabetes, high blood pressure and other medical problems including cancer daily so we are not giving the correct information to prevent disease. That is where Dr. Akili Graham is trying to make a difference. He has implemented a program called the How to Series which is designed to do exactly what IS NOT being done by the general medical community. Based on the health of overall americans which is represented by 70% overweight and 40% obesity, doctors, nurses, educators and other ancillary personnel are INEFFECTIVE!!! So this series is to do what is missing in medical care. It has 6 different aspects which include: How to Eat to Live, How to Shop to Live, How to Cook to Live, How to Exercise to Live, How to Live with Stress and How to Be a Teen. Our assessment is that these interactive sessions will give you all the ammunition to begin the process of improving your life and becoming whole. The interactions include presentations with visual aids, grocery store tours, cooking demonstrations, exercise in the park and interactive teen and adult conferences for dealing with the stresses of life. We as a people need to grow into whole beings and we humbly submit that these programs can help begin the process. People are living longer but we would argue that they are not truly LIVING. We believe that being in a nursing home, visiting the hospital or doctor’s office frequently is actually an active DYING process! Living means having the energy and ability to make choices in life and not being inhibited by tiredness, illness or chronic poor health. We need a new paradigm in medicine; one which focuses on prevention with proper nutrition, exercise, water intake and mental and spiritual wellness. Further, we recognize a greater fundamental for strong holistic health: when there is disease, we must rely on the healing power God has already placed within each of us. There should not be a separation of the trinity when it comes to health; mental, physical and spiritual health is interconnected. It is our belief that in addition to changing the current system of healthcare in the US, that we must return to a more natural approach to healing. The body’s ability to heal itself, in conjunction with natural remedies can significantly reduce healthcare costs for our people. We recognize that most pharmacological approaches are derived from plant substances and thus we can return to plant-based diets and herbal remedies to address the many health concerns listed above. In essence, quality food can reduce pathology, allow us to avoid medication side effects and will improve overall health and quality of life. Hence, food serves as nutrition, energy and medicine.
